SLIGHTLY BACKWARDS

Just realized that I wrote about Christmas but never had the chance to put some pictures up. Here you go, dad...enjoy!
Sun setting on the cathedral at Wawel Castle.

Christmas Eve dinner (Wigilia) at the hostel.
Kids singing (well, more like yelling) Polish carols on a stage set up in the market.

The Krakow Christmas market at night.

you know you're in polska when

  • "i speak a little english" either means you speak none at all or are fluent
  • a night of drinking consists of vodka shots and chasers
  • a wink doesn't mean someone's hitting on you
  • all the dogs have muzzles
  • cars stop when you're crossing the street...and they don't swear (that i know of)
  • cashiers sit, not stand, behind the register
  • everyone is eating ice cream cones
  • it's bad luck to thank someone for wishing you good luck
  • it's not unusual to pass 18 year old priests on the street
  • it's odd to carry a bottle of water with you
  • it's rare to find a clothes dryer
  • it's rude if you don't say goodbye before leaving the train car
  • it's weird if you don't have the change for your transaction
  • men dance
  • napkins are actually tissue paper
  • senior citizens are driving "motorbikes" around the city
  • sidewalk vendors are everywhere
  • students stand when a teacher enters the room...in state schools
  • the traffic light turns yellow before red and green
  • there's security at the grocery store
  • walking the sidewalk is a daily game of chicken
  • you can drink your yogurt
  • you can open the window two different ways
  • you don't have a shower curtain
  • you get excited to see a truck or an SUV
  • you have to leave packages in a locker if you go into another store
  • you have to pay for a cart at the grocery store
  • you have to push the store door open, not pull
  • you see a mack truck double pass on a road with no shoulder
  • you see someone wearing what you wear to the club, to work
  • you're addicted to nutella
  • your change is "handed" to you on a plate next to the register
